My "Lonely Place"

This is my favorite spot on campus. I consider this sloped lawn overlooking Lake Michigan my "lonely place." By the term "lonely place," I do not mean a place that puts me in a state of alienation or isolation from others (hindi pa naman ako ganoon ka-buang, pero malapit na yata akong matuluyan, hehe). Rather, I am referring to a place where I can enjoy some solitude, in the midst of my active, busy life. (Don't we all have moments when we just need time to ourselves, even if we enjoy the company and fellowship of others?) That's exactly what my special place by the lake means to me. To borrow from a poem I read in college (the title of which escapes me now), I can "relish the ruthless calm of being myself" right here. I can simply be in this place, where I am alone with my God.

I used to sit by the lake a lot when I came to this country more than three years ago. This place has been a silent witness to all my random thoughts, prayers, reflections, and yes, struggles and tears. It has served as a sacred space, in so many ways.

Since winter is just around the corner here in the Windy City, I won't be able to visit my "lonely place" for the next couple of months. Oh well. I will return to it, eventually, and it will welcome me with open arms.

i like the water vapor/mists that goes to the face and the horizons of large body of water specially when it's raining. those great lakes around your area have a hue of blue that is different and mysterious

Hey Diane,

Just wanted to say I was checking out your site via SisterBloggers and I was so surprised to see a picture of someone I know in your Flickr thing! I think I met you when you came to Grand Rapids to visit Elizabeth? I was the Dominican Volunteer last year. Anyway, I posted about it on my blog... Peace! Nat

Nang Ethel: Hehe you're right, maganda ang sunset dito. Buti kung may ka-holding hands ako hahaha :) Don't worry, I won't forget your kusahos. Pahingi ng mailing address mo, may ipapadala talaga ako. Thanks.

Mei: Sorry you had a hard time tagging me. Thanks for your comment. Take care!

Air Milikay: I agree. Lake Michigan is one mysterious creation, in particular. Ingat po kayo.

Malaine: Hehe tama po kayo. Dun ako pag trip ko mag-emote kaya lang di na pwede ngayon kasi malamig na dito.

Doc Nikki: Hehe talaga? Pareho pala tayo. Masarap mag-emote dun, promise! *wink*

Fay: Saan ang secret garden mo? Ingat!

Graveyard Zombie: We're on the same wavelength, girl. I like being around people but I need some time to myself just to recharge. God bless you too, sis!

Nat: Omygod! I remember you. Yes, I met you when I stayed the night at your apartment during the first week of March. How are you? I went back to Grand Rapids for the 4th of July weekend but you had already left by then.

Speaking of Elizabeth, she just entered the monastery (in Farmington Hills, MI) today. I talked to her on the phone this morning to say goodbye right before Sr. Kathi drove her there, and I was crying like anything. =(

Glad you found your way to my blog. Keep in touch! Take care!

J: Thanks, friend. God bless you too. Ingat ka!

Replying to your question posted on my blog: No, I've not been out of Texas and I've yet to visit the Dominicans.

We have a very strong Filipino community near here and their parish has just built a beautiful new church. Unfortunately, the acoustics suck, but that is often the case as most planners don't want to spend megabucks for acoustics. Anyhow, the Filipinos have very strong family values and take turns having novenas in their homes.

I wish you the best.
